Specimen Labels

All specimen labels should have the following information. Genus, species,sex,
place of capture containing the town,county,state or province and finally the
country. The date of capture should also be shown. Other info can be added I.E.
method of collecting, name of collector or type of habitat the insect was
found, this is optional information and most collectors keep this data in a log
book or computerdisk. A typical label I use is shown below

Danaus plexippus (male)
Boxford, Essex Co. Mass.
Jul, 17 1999

Note: Common names are generally not used in a scientific collection since a
species may have several common names depending on the geographic locallity
I.E. the mourning cloak (Nymphalis antiopa) in North America is called the
Camberwell Beauty in Britain.
