do silkworms eat mulberry and lettuce

I have only heard of true silkworms (B. mori) eating lettuce out of 
desperation in the last instar or two.  There may be some lab strains out
there though that are a bit less picky but don't know for sure.

as mulberry leaves - is this the case?  Are there
any other alternative foods for them?
