The color of the chrysalis is effected by both photo period and surface. 
In a short-day or short photoperiods the chrysalis is usually brown.
Perhaps this condition simulates the approach of the over wintering or
dormant season when leaves would be absent and the appearing as a piece
wood would better serve as camouflage.

When exposed to long-day or longer photoperiods the chrysalis they will
be brown on a rough surface, but green on a smooth surface. Perhaps the
living or smooth surface of the hemlock was enough to trigger the
effect. Backround colors will also effect the out come. Those of brown,
blue, red or green, generally produce green chrysalises.
