report from Glen Beg

As I remarked belatedly,
Glen Beg is in Ireland, in County Mayo, near County Galway. It is a
smallish mountain, extending into Lough Mask. A road of sorts goes
halfway round it.
Oak trees are now protected; the farmer I chatted with showed me a field
in which they had been retained when the woods was cleared.
As most of Ireland was deforested long ago, it is unusual to find a
stand of ancient oaks, and hazel trees of huge proportions, along with
other fine trees. Therefore I hoped to spot the Purple Hairstreak in
this place.
I am hoping that Ian Rippey will check it out.
I have suggested also that, if the Small Mountain Ringlet Erebia
epiphron still exists in Ireland, here's where it will be.
Neighbors I've talked with are protective of this wood, and have
suggested that it is protected not only by Irish laws, but by
unspecified powers; the same that protect the ring forts.
Fairies, elementals, Picts, farmers ...
Good hunting
