Do not splurge on finish, leatherette vinyl, etc., when flat black stained 
1/2" square pine or poplar will be cheaper and more appropriate.  If your 
customer is so demented as to want 24k gold leaf over relieved cherubim, 
let her shop the job.  She'll do it anyway.
