Ken,

As an occupational physician I have been interested in the hazards
facing us outdoor types----fishermen, guides, park maintenance workers,
natural history researchers, moth collectors. Kevin Zimmer (Victor
Emmanuel Tours) recounted his harrowing experience trying to divert a
Grizzly Bear from a tour group in Alaska.

I've had a couple of near-death experiences (most recently in an
unprotected tent in Tanzania where we were assured that Lions "never
come into camp". The two hours of terror were worse than anything I
experienced under bombardment.

A friend (former friend) of mine became a commercial fisherman in Alaska
and died in an accident (I never got the details).

We recently heard that an Argentine ornithologist who my wife knew 30
years ago, perished from an "unknown disease acquired in Bolivia".

So, I'm always interested in learning of the hazards encountered in
various places under "field conditions".

Well, stay healthy. MIKE GOCHFELD
