Snake mimicing ceterpillar ID

A few weeks ago I ran into a caterpillar that seemed to mimic a snakes head
at its rear end.  Here's a couple of pics:

(Sorry - can't the roll of film where I got the _front_ end clearly
depicted...)

I'm sure this is a common and well known creature - I'd just like to have
the right ID for the photos.  Can anyone tell me what it is?  It was
photographed in SW Michigan in late September.
