Yes, you describe exactly my procedure with tiny larvae.   Every 12 hours 
the box is opened, rinsed, frass dumped and knocked off leaves, paper towel 
replaced, larvae checked for health, etc.   But when they hit their second 
instar and/or get big enough to see easily, they go to the open air.   When 
I've tried to raise larvae to adulthood in these boxes, they've died.

 >... after filling your vase with water, take a piece of plastic wrap, put 
it over the jar or vase, poke a little hole in it for the plant stem,

Or plug the top with paper towel.
