Monarch migration

Hello all,
I spent most of last week in Michigan's Upper Peninsula sampling. On
Friday (8/17) I observed 50-100 fresh Danaus pleixppus (Monarch) adults at
an old field in Mackinac County. It was about noon and the weather was
cloudy, cool (~60F), and breezy. As I walked among the wildflowers I
flushed 1 to 2 adults at a time. They would circle for a couple of minutes
and land again on foliage. I eventually figured out that they were
roosting on the downwind side of scattered white cedar trees, with as many
as half a dozen to a tree.
Now I'm back at work, longing for the sound of wind through the pines and
waves breaking on the Lake Superior shore.
