Painted Lady caterpillars damage crops this year

In Canada there has been a published account of crop damage also; through
contamination by caterpillar frass. Byers, J.R., B.T. Roth, R.D. Thomson and
A.K. Topinka. 1984. Contamination of mustard and canola seed by frass of
painted lady caterpillars, Vanessa cardui (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae). The
Canadian Entomologist 116:1431-1432.

We had unusually high populations of painted lady (Vanessa cardui L.) 
in Nebraska this summer, starting in May and continuing throughout 
the summer.I have heard similar observations from South Dakota, and 
some other midwestern U. S. states east of Nebraska. Painted lady
caterpillars damaged soybean and sunflower crops and some fields 
were treated with insecticides.
