I too have eaten crow and probably will do so again in the future. I have
found that it is actually not bad when embellished with HP sauce :-)

Friday afternoon is a good time to eat crow.

Some of you may have read my rather lengthy post yesterday on this subject
line regarding the distinction between scientific and non-scientific
information. I strongly believe in the distinctions that I presented there
and also support John Shuey's previous post regarding the uses of county
level versus site specific information for natural heritage purposes.

However, Harry Pavulaan has made me aware of a critical error in my post --
the USGS site DOES distinguish between visual observations and specimen or
photographic vouchers. In the distribution maps, the dark blue counties
(i.e. county records) are based on specimen or photographic vouchers
verified by experts. The light blue color (dubious or unverified records)
denotes counties with sight observation(s) only. The distinction is
implied in the page on how to submit a county record, but may not expressed
stated elsewhere. Hence my confusion and rather embarassing
jumping-to-conclusions -- gulp.

I sincerely apologize to the USGS project, Dr. Opler, Harry and those who
read my post for my error. For any of you who mentaly took the USGS
atlasing project off your reference shelf and misplaced it somewhere else,
please find it and put it back in its rightful place.

I think I'd best go prepare some specimens.
