Planting Wild Sunflower Seeds

Last year I over sowed wild sunflower seed by just scattering with my
hand. This resulted in most of the sunflowers being thin stalked
because of the crowding. I don't want to make the same mistake again.
Planting each one of these 1/16 inch size seeds one at a time would be
very time consuming because I am doing this over a large area. Does
anyone know of a better way to sow or plant the seeds to get a good
distribution pattern and density of seeds other than to be more careful
how much I scatter by hand?
