I am working with a friend on an article for a general interest magazine
on N. Metalmark (Calephelis borealis). There are some items that we
hope to collect additional information on from this group.
Firstly, we would like to know the status of this species in the various
states included in its range. Have populations been increasing,
decreasing, or remaining static in each of these states? Is the species
considered for listing as endangered, threatened, or "of special
concern" within each state?
Has anyone observed host plant usage of other than Round-leaf Ragwort
(Senecio obovatus)?
Are there nectaring plants used beyond butterflyweed (Asclepias
tuberosa)?
Habitat locations we have observed in Virginia include openings on
wooded slopes with limestone and with seeps, or with nearby streams.
Are other habitats utilized in other areas?
We have noted that some areas utilized by this species have had
successional growth, which seems to cause a decrease or elimination of
ragwort and nectar plants. In at least one locale, the presence of a
power line right-of-way has provided open areas for the growth of these
herbaceous plants, and presumably continued successful utilization by
the metalmark. Has anyone noted similar situations, or other factors
that prevent succession that have benefited the species?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
