Field data (Sightings)

Along the lines of this discussion - is there a published list of what the 
scientific community is looking for as far as field data goes?  Maybe I 
should say it this way - what is the most commonly noted info when in the 
field and how is it used.  For myself, I usually only list date, weather, 
temp, host plant, male/female and I usually only note the stuff that I 
actually collect.
