Went to Monrovia Canyon Park 6/7 (San Gabriel foothills, no. of Los
Angeles) and found some fairly common butterflies, but there were HUGE 
numbers of Variable Checkerspots.   Kids were having fun running through
the clouds of CS's as if they were running through a front yard
sprinkler system on a hot day. One lady asked me about the "swarms of
moths".

Incredible numbers of Variable Checkerspots (nom. ssp. chalcedon) are
being reported from the Santa Monica and San Gabriel Mts.
