Whats in a word: headlines

The rest of the article on the Karner Blue (Schenctady Daily Gazette, 
June 9th) had the continuation headline:  KARNER BLUE BUTTERFLY NUMBERS 
UP.  

A year ago it might have read  KARNER BLUE BUTTERFLY NUMBER'S UP, as if 
approaching extirpation.
