Taxonomy or Pulp Fiction ??

Well, I am feeling kinda feisty and someone complained about things being
too quiet on this discussion group so here is my deliberate effort to stir
things up. Before getting to the substance of my deliberately provocative
comments I must state quite emphatically that my comments are directed at
the taxonomic interpretations/opinions and NOT directed at the people who
hold the opinions. Everyone can believe whatever they want. For this reason
I will not mention names.
Here goes: For many years I have found it totally bizarre that Boloria
distincta and Boloria astarte would be treated as one species in some
literature. Recently a publication puts forth the opinion that we should now
call both of these perfectly good species as nothing more than subspecies of
the Asian Boloria tritonia. I reserve the right to express my opinion and on
this business of calling distincta, astarte and tritonia one species; I have
the following opinion: pulp fiction, junk science, incredible crap,
illogical halucinations, piles of dung, etc etc ad nauseum. There, that
should stir things up a little bit :-)
