Digital slide scanner?

In personal correspondence with Harry Pavulaan on some TILS business, he
mentioned the following. My response follows. Just before sending my email
back to him I though I would just share this over the Leps L bulletin
board. SO, the question is .... Is there an easy (and readily available)
way to scan slides to digital images?

Harry,
The slides to digital question is one we both need an answer to. I would
think that this is now (or fast becoming) a real problem with the advent of
digital publishing. Much like the way CDs replaced records and tapes -the
material _had_ to be moved. The only way I know is the expensive and time
consuming process of converting slides to photos and then scanning the
photos (which process almost always loses quality). There needs to be a
cost effective "slide scanner" invented.
