If this were true, then nearly all the thousands of birdwatchers in the 
country would be wasting their time, as most of them merely learn to 
ID/watch/photograph/feed birds without ever adding a thing to the 
science.   However, IMO the appreciation of nature is a good end in 
itself.  Also, at least in the case of birdwatching, these 
non-science-contributing people have become a voice for saving habitat and 
teaching children about nature.  In fact they probably contribute MORE to 
those efforts than some of the scientists, who are too busy.
