includes state listed insects.

A List of Endangered, Threatened, Special Concern, and Rare Insects of the
United States

Compiled by Gary A. Dunn, M.S., F.R.E.S., Director of Education

Young Entomologists' Society, Inc.

Special Publication No. 11 January 1996

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

More than 840 species of insects are currently considered to be endangered,
threatened, or rare within the United States and are listed by state natural
resource departments or natural heritage agencies. No list of this type
could ever be considered more than a "work in progress" due of the dynamic
environmental and legal situations within the United States.

Among those states which have an agency to monitor endangered species, each
has developed its own criteria for evaluating and listing endangered,
threatened, and rare insect species (although most follow the guidelines
developed by The Nature Conservancy more than 20 years ago).

The status of insect species on this list is indicated using the following
abbreviations:

E = endangered species (either a state and/or federal list designation)
T = threatened species (either a state and/or federal list designation)
SC = special concern species (a state list designation)
SS = sensitive species (a state list designation; also used by Bureau of
Land Management
and U.S.D.A. Forest Service listed species)
SI = special interest (a state list designation)
SINC = species in need of conservation (a state list designation)
R  = rare (a state list designation)
WL = watch list (a state list designation)
FPE = federal proposed endangered (either a state and/or federal
designation)
C1 = a candidate species that has sufficient data to warrant federal listing

C2 = a candidate species that lacks sufficient data to warrant federal
listing

Important Note: Only those species listed as state and/or federal endangered
and threatened species are protected by endangered species legislation. (The
names of these species are given in bold- face print in this list.) None of
the special concern, sensitive, special interest, rare, watch list, and
candidate species are legally protected (in almost all instances), and are
generally listed by state agencies for informational purposes only.
