The wedge is inserted perpendicular to the dowel, about halfway along the
slot. It's pushed in until the jaws open wide enough that the jaws can be
slipped over the head--no tension on the head. The head is wider than it's
high, so stays within the jaws as you totate the dowel. I usually slide
the jaws onto the head from the side of the head.
