Hickory Horned Devil

A friend has raised a Hickory Horned Devile (Royal Walnut Moth)
caterpillar that is now ready to pupate. So far no evidence of parasites.

She has provided it soft earth, but it has not shown any inclination to
dig since it stopped eating a week ago.  It pushes dirt around but no
burying.

Are there any special requirements or tricks.
