NEWEST PHYCITINAE MONA FASCICLE IS PUBLISHED
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 8 April 2004
The Wedge Entomological Research Foundation announces publication of the
most recent fascicle in the Moths of America North of Mexico series of
monographs. The fascicle, number 15.5, revises 47 genera of Phycitinae
(Pyralidae) in North America. Authored by Dr. H. H. Neunzig, this 338
page fascicle includes 10 color plates of specimens. Ten black-and-white
plates and 116 line drawings in the text illustrate morphological
characters of adults and larvae.
This monograph is the 23rd fascicle published since inception of the
series, affectionately known as MONA, in 1970, and it is the 4th
fascicle authored by Dr. Neunzig. The Phycitinae, a large subfamily in
the family Pyralidae, are a diverse and important group of Lepidoptera
faunistically and economically. Neunzig is a recognized authority on
this group of moths. Fascicle 15.5 includes description of 22 species
and 4 genera new to science. Thirty-two new combinations are proposed,
including several species previously in the genus Nephopterix. Of
particular interest are the genera Dioryctria, which includes many
economically important species, and Pyla, which has many day-flying
species. A synonymic check list of the described species updates the
Check List of the Lepidoptera of North America.
In 33 years of publication, the MONA series has documented the
occurrence of 2,589 species from the geographical region of North
America North of Mexico. Three hundred seventy-eight species and
forty-four subspecies were described as new to science in the series.
The MONA series is meant to be an authoritative replacement for the long
out-of-date W. J. Holland's The Moth Book, originally published in 1903
and reprinted in 1968 by Dover. This publication and previous fascicles
are available from the publisher ($115.00 US dollars plus shipping) and
many natural history book dealers. For more information about this
fascicle and previous publications, please contact The Wedge
Entomological Research Foundation, 85253 Ridgetop Dr., Eugene, OR
97405-9535 USA. Shipping for fascicle 15.5 from the publisher is $4.00
per copy (U. S., Canadian, and Mexican orders) or $5.00 per copy (all
other countries). Complete sets can be purchased at discount. Fascicle
13.1C is out of print. Make payment in US dollars.
