[Fwd: [SoWestLep] FW: [leps-talk] passing of Ron Gatrelle]

I just received this message. It was requested that someone post this to
Leps-L. I myself find this extremely difficult to believe. I met Ron for
the first time at Lep Soc a few weeks ago. Like Harry Pavulaan it seems
to me that (hopefully) there must be some kind of mistake.

I thought the rest of you would want to know. If someone out there can post
to LEPS-L, please forward there as well. LEPS-L is where I first
encountered Ron, and I know there are those who have not subscribed to any
other lists.

Shocking news, to say the least. Ron will be sorely missed by all. In his
memory, we can all persist to get among 'em.

Mark Walker.

This comes as much of a shock to me as much as it will to all who knew Ron
Gatrelle. I considered Ron a dear friend and am personally left with a
feeling of great loss and emptiness. Anyone who has met Ron and his
wonderful family will certainly miss him. As I am still left speechless,
the following obituary will provide basic information.

Copied from the Charleston Post & Courier obituaries section this morning:

GATRELLE, Ronald Entered into eternal rest on August 14, 2005, Pastor Ronald
Richard Gatrelle, husband of Marilyn Riggins Gatrelle. Residence. Goose
Creek, SC. The relatives and friends of Pastor and Mrs. Ronald Richard
Gatrelle are invited to attend the Funeral services of the former at
Emmanuel Christian Fellowship on Thursday, August 18, 2005 at eleven
o'clock. Interment will be private. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR INC.,
GREENRIDGE ROAD CHAPEL on Wednesday evening from six until eight o'clock. In
lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Emmanuel Christian Fellowship, PO
Box 208 , Goose Creek, SC 29445. Pastor Gatrelle was born in Marshalltown,
Iowa on Jaunary 27, 1946 the son of Donald C. Gatrelle and Arlene Rash
Gatrelle. He was a veteran of the US Navy and the Pastor of Emmanuel
Christian Fellowship, an International Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was
the Co-Founder and President of The International Lepidoptera Survey (TILS)
which is devoted to the worldwide collection of Lepidoptera for the purpose
of scientific discovery, determination, and documentation. He was the Editor
and a contributing writer for The Taxonomic Report, a publication of TILS.
He was also member of the International Lepidoptrea Society. Surviving are
his wife of Goose Creek, one son Ben Gatrelle of Goose Creek, two daughters:
Tammra Mueller and Katie Gatrelle of Goose Creek, Two grandchildren Shauna
Mueller and Nicholas Mueller. A memorial message may be written to the
family by visiting our website at jhenrystuhr.com. Visit our guestbook at

Even this evening, I keep thinking that there must be a mistake in the
newspaper somewhere, but a call to Ron's wife Marilyn confirmed that Ron
suffered complications from a blood clot over a period of hours.

Please post to the guestbook if you feel inclined. The "memorial" link at
jhenrystuhr.com has not yet posted the obituary as of early Monday morning
but hopefully this will be available soon. I believe people may send
condolences at this time directly to the family via this website. If anyone
wishes to express their sympathies by phone, please write to me and I'll
give you contact information.

Agree with Ron on some issues or not, his TILS posts will be sorely missed
by many and will pass into the great legends of lepidopterology. Ron
brought many taxonomic issues to the forefront, described several new
subspecies and one species, and resolved questions over many.

TILS and discussion group issues are now in the air. We'll take that next
step in time.

All for now,
Harry Pavulaan
