Aberrant Papilio polyxenes

Mark,

First, where's the specimen from??? Second, I have taken at least one female specimen of (what I suppose is?) polyxenes here in northeast Massachusetts which looks a lot like polyxenes but has the machaon "type" orange HW anal spot, same as in your specimen...

I have also taken "polyxenes" here in New England with the black spot on the margin inside the orange HW anal spot and not centered as it "should" be in polyxenes. I have also found this feature in specimens from at least New Orleans LA, San Antonio TX etc. and in both sexes. On April 30 at Meriden CT I took such a specimen, a male, with not only the black spot on the margin but with the yellow spotbands extremely wide, almost 1/2 way developed on the HW.

Re Mark's specimen again, Scott has a nice photo of P. kahlii in his book (Howe illustrates tis also)...Kahlii of course is polyxnes vs. machaon in Manitoba...

Alex
