Vanessa vs. Monarchs

I have previously noted that, in southeastern Michigan and southwestern Ontario, the Painted Lady was very common in the late 50's and early 60's...This was followed by a period of at least 5 years in which the species was virtually absent...
 
This sort of thing takes place periodically. The Compton Tortoiseshell exhibits a similar periodocity...

I run transects at 2-3 sites here in central Ohio, and Ladies, either Painted or American, have been AWOL all Spring & Summer so far.  Red Admirals, however, have been in normal numbers, and Monarchs (as most have noted) were early & common.
