I have no bird sightings to report, but I did see two Black Witch Moths
yesterday in my yard early in the morning (about 7 am). It was during
the period when the wind was gusting hard, and the rain had eased up to
a sprinkle. I went out to fill my bird feeders, wading through an inch
of water; when I opened the top of one of my squirrel-proof feeders, two
Black Witch Moths flew out, and immediately disappeared on the wind. I
assume that they crawled in under the roof of the feeder, which has
enough clearance for a large insect
to go in sideways.
Reminded me of a similarly windy, stormy day in SE Arizona [around
August 8, 2000] when I saw at least 50 Black Witch Moths sheltering in
an old shack near Patagonia.
