Lepsters,
I asked a classicist friend, who told me that "nemesis" implies fate,
and a notion of inevitability. This is the sense in which "fatal" is
being used, not in the sense of "lethal." After all, in Greek
mythology, death was rarely the worst inevitability that might befall
a person!
