Mike,

There are more differences between (female) anthedon and creola than a
"punched out line"...There are a whole host of phenotypic differences
that, when taken in context, add up to comparative different
"looks"...Let's remember, too, that when speaking of anthedon, we are
speaking of three different taxa (and at least two distinct species)
each of which are different phenotypically, not including anthedon
borealis which is of course well out of the range of creola...

Same thing, really, with appalachia and eurydice...There are more
differences than merely a wavy line...Among other things, there are
habitat and behavioral differences...There is also through the Upper
Midwest and into the northeast, a curious occurrence of a fumosus-like
taxon that adds to the confusion...Perhaps it was the occurence of this
"fumosus" in the northeast that led Scott, for one, to suggest that
there are apparent hybrids of appalachia and eurydice around the New
York City region??? (I've wondered about this for a long time)...

Alex

This discussion of pattern has been very enlightening (particularly for
someone who has not yet set eyes on E. creola. However, it doesn't seem
that a "punched out" line is a good isolating mechanism. I would be
interesting in any comments on the Sussex Co. Delaware record (Opler
County Atlas).

It's interesting though that one of the differences ascribed to
Satyrodes eurydice vs S. Appalachia is also the waviness of a line
(although there are genitalic differences). MIKE GOCHFELD

Hi Tom - assuming that the photo below makes it though the list server
filter - you can see that your bug is E. anthedon. The best character
is the median ventral FW line that is "punched out" toward the apex in
creala and fairly flat in anthedon.

Best,

j shuey

Can anybody help with this butterfly ID.
To me it leans toward a female Lethe creola but might just be a female
Lethe anthedon abberration. I found several L. anthedon and one of
these odd ones. The L. creola shouldn't be this far North from what I
can find in the books. But butterflies seldom read those.
