Wanna get away? Why not make plans to participate in the first Birding &
Butterfly Festival based in Laredo next month?
Jim Hailey, the Monte Mucho Audubon Society and the Laredo Convention and
Visitors Bureau have put together a truly remarkable wide ranging list of
field trip destinations, many on large private ranches such as the Halff
Brothers Ranch...
Webb, Zapata, and surrounding southwest Texas counties comprise one of the
most tropical, least surveyed regions in the nation. Did I mention Martin
Reid is leading multiple trips to the Halff Brothers Ranch? If you've seen
any of Martin's reports from the area, you'll know what a gold mine of
biodiversity this ranch can be....
Trips will be limited to 12 participants and will be filled on a first come
first serve basis.

========================
This 20,000 plus operating ranch is about one and one-half hours north of
Laredo.
South Texas has very few areas that provide such diversified habitat for so
many types of birds, butterflies and dragonflies as does Halff Brothers
Ranch. The Frio River runs through the center of the ranch and feeds more
than 4000 acres of hardwood bottomland.
We have noted two species of rare birds, including the Rufous-capped Warbler
feeding along the roots of massive on the vertical sides of the Frio River
banks. We have also photographed the Mountain Plover during the winter. And
the sod fields nearby are home to a wintering flock of Mountain Plovers.
Martin is the only person eligible to birding trips on the property and has
discovered numerous unusual to rare species on the property in the past 5 or
6 years.
