The Yasuni Biosphere Reserve is one of the most biodiverse spots on
earth in groups such as frogs, plants and insects. This book intends to
show a very charismatic yet ‘little’ explored group, the
butterflies. It contains a photographic guide of 344 butterfly species
of Papilionidae, Pieridae and Nymphalidae; it also narrates stories
about their natural history and challenges to preserve them. Photos of
wildlife and lanscapes are also included, along with illustrations of
several butterfly species. As Yasuni, its cultural and biological
diversity, is struggling to survive in a ‘sea’ of oil exploitation,
the book also describes the history of the park, its current threats of
extinction and hopes for the future. A particular emphasis was placed to
tell the story of the Tagaeri/Taromenane, the uncontacted groups
inhabiting the Yasuni forests, who are defending their territories with
naked skins but brave hearts.
