Job Announcement
Project Archivist, Center for Jewish History (New York City)
Position description:
The Center for Jewish History, a research center open to the public, seeks
a part-time (20 hours/week) project archivist for a term ending September
30, 2012,with the possibility of extension. The project archivist will
work on processing Yiddish-language archival collections and encoding
finding aids in EAD (Encoded Archival Description).
Responsibilities include:
Converting the descriptive content of paper finding aids to EAD-encoded
finding aids. This conversion consists of description enhancement,
transliteration and translation of Yiddish descriptions into English, and
the creation of EAD finding aids using an XML editor. Recomending basic
preservation work. Assisting in the selection of which records will be
digitized for a later digitization stage of the project.
The archivist will work under the supervision of the CJH Senior Project
Archivist and report to the CJH Director of Archive and Library Services.
The archivist also will discuss practices and quality assurance with
archivists from the Center's Partner organizations.
Qualifications:
Reading knowledge of Yiddish is required. Strong preference will be given
to candidates with a master's degree in library and information science or
history with archival coursework. Familiarity with archival theory and
practice and metadata standards (especially DACS and EAD), knowledge of
20th century Jewish history and excellent writing skills are highly
desirable. Must be able to work efficiently, independently and
collaboratively.
Compensation:$20/hour
