Mendele Personal Notices and Announcements

July 23, 2012

To minimize wear and tear on the untershames, three requests:

1. Send time-sensitive notices well in advance.

2. Send material as plain text: no HTML, other coding,or

attachments;and write MENDELE PERSONALS in the subject line.

3. Correspond directly with the person who or organization which has
posted the notice, *not* with your ever-beleaguered untershames.

Subject: Mumme Looshen-An Anatomy of Yiddish*

Mumme Loohshen - An Anatomy of Yiddish, by Joseph Witriol (1912-2002)
has now been published online by his son and can be read here:

http://mummeloohshen.wordpress.com/

It is a linguistically oriented book on the Yiddish language. The
words and expressions recorded are those actually spoken by the
author's mother.

I quote from one of his letters to a publisher in 1974:

“[Mumme Loohshen] is a comprehensive survey of the Yiddish language
[with] a strong linguistic bias. The book is discursive in style and,
I hope, makes pleasurable reading. Inevitably, however, there are a
few parts which are of a text-book nature. The book contains a great
deal of solid linguistic information which I believe can be found in
no other English book, certainly not in Leo Rosten’s Joys of Yiddish
or Lilian Mermin Feinsilver’s The Taste of Yiddish..."

You can read more about the book at
http://philipwitriol.wordpress.com/author/philipwitriol/ which is
where any comments may be directed.

Many thanks

Philip I Witriol
