To minimize wear and tear on the untershames, three requests:
1. Send time-sensitive notices well in advance.
2. Send material as plain text to victor.bers at yale.edu as plain text (no
HTML, other coding, or attachments) and write MENDELE PERSONALS in the
subject line.
3. Correspond directly with the person who or organization which has posted

Between Destruction and Reconstruction – Volume 1: The Correspondence
between M. Strigler and H. Leivick 1945-1952, the Dov Sadan Publishing
Project, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, 372 pp.
The book publishes correspondence between the Buchenwald survivor Mordechai
Strigler and the poet H. Leivick – two eminent Yiddish writers of the 20th
century. The Yiddish letters, deciphered from the original manuscripts, are
published here for the first time.
730 Hebrew explanatory footnotes were added to the letters, as well as a
trilingual introduction in Hebrew, Yiddish and English, and scores of
addenda of articles taken from the world Yiddish press.
The letters constitute a seminal contribution to the literary and
intellectual biography of Mordechai Strigler, for a better understanding of
his holocaust writings. M. Strigler survived 12 Nazi concentration camps.
Immediately after World War II he became one of the significant Yiddish
writers in the 20th century. His correspondence with H. Leyvick During
1945-1952 delineates, from a historical and cultural perspective, the world
of Yiddish Literature during the first 7 years after the war, a period
scarcely studied until today.
The book contains two indexes: an index of topics and an index of names.
