Pearl Sapoznik Memorial Fund

From: Living Traditions <Living_Traditions at mail.vresp.com>

Mayn Tayere,

Of the numerous memories many have about KlezKamp, our 30-year celebration
of all things Yiddish, one of the most powerful was being with those who
were born and lived in der alter heym and who carried its legacy wholly
intact.

One of the most beloved and treasured of those has just left us: singer and
passionate folksmentsh—my mother, Pearl (Pirl) Sapoznik z”l (1920-2016.)

A Holocaust survivor and lover of all things Yiddish, Pearl had an
unquenchable fervor for singing and sharing her vivid memories of growing
up in the pre-war Polish city of Rovne. She was a gentle but powerful
magnet for all those who sought a vivid link to what makes our heritage so
vibrant and compelling.

While many knew about her love for Yiddish culture, few knew of my mother’s
unwavering commitment to the care and support of indigent Holocaust
survivors. For many years, my mother was on the board of the Jewish
Community Council of Greater Coney Island (JCCGCI), a not-for-profit agency
tasked with bringing desperately needed services and support to
poverty-stricken survivors of Hitler. Though their numbers are rapidly
dwindling, but over 2,500 survivors who live below the poverty line are
supported by the JCCGCI.

When German government representatives came to the US and considered ending
their support through the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against
Germany, they were brought directly to my mother, whose voice was
passionate and committed enough to convince them of the need to continue
offering services for her fellow survivors. The end result: not only did
the Germans not end their support, but they actually increased it!

In the spirit of my mother’s unwavering commitment, the Jewish Community
Council has established a fund in her memory to continue the work she so
deeply believed in. https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.jccgci.org_pearl-2Dsapoznik-2Dmemorial-2Dfund_&d=AwIFaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=hgSCSvtHqNOp40iT6T4uKyOHqvQreUPfVso-KO1Kgto&m=JgsX_14zGf-FUYZ-rCPv32eTaCtTGA5CM5M1ZJYEpLo&s=rlDidHKvRiL-2c06H5cSj0ysvZkgKEPfFJauoCUze14&e=

Though my mother’s beautiful voice is stilled, her selfless commitment can
live on with your help.

Mit varmste grisn,

Henry Sapoznik
Founder,
KlezKamp
