Mendele Personal Notices and Announcements
Date: Dec.5, 2018

To minimize wear and tear on the untershames, three requests:

1. Send time-sensitive notices well in advance.
2. Send material as plain text to victor.bers at yale.edu as plain text (no
HTML, other coding, or attachments) and write MENDELE PERSONALS in the
subject line.
3. Correspond directly with the person who or organization which has posted
the notice, *not* with your ever-beleaguered untershames.

I am working on a translation and cannot find the meaning of a word in the
sentence below, spelled <shin, hey, alef, resh, yud, ayin>. Is anyone
familiar with this word? Google Translate came up with “shariah,” which is
definitely incorrect.

Jews who were so preoccupied with concerns for earning a livelihood around
<shin, hey, alef, resh, yud, ayin> and other hare-brained schemes that they
were satisfied with a little bit of rest, with a few chickpeas and beer in
their stomach at a bris-milah, with a melave-malke, with a good herring and
little bit of beer.
