The League for Yiddish and the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research invite
you to the world premiere of “Yonia Fain: With Pen and Paintbrush,” a film
in the series “Worlds within a World: Conversations with Yiddish Writers,”
Thursday, July 26 at 7 PM at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, 15
West 16th St. Manhattan. The film is directed by Josh Waletzky and produced
by the League for Yiddish.

Yiddish with English subtitles; 75 minutes followed by a panel discussion
featuring Josh Waletzky, Sheva Zucker (interviewer) and Shane Baker
(longtime coworker of Fain’s at the Congress for Jewish Culture).
The film is free and open to the public. Light refreshments after the

Noted Yiddish writer and painter Yonia Fain (1914-2013) is one of those
unique figures whose life story encapsulates a piece of Jewish history.
In the film Fain  discusses his life in Vilna before the war, his political
activism as a Bundist in Warsaw, his years as a refugee in Shanghai, his
relationship with Diego Rivera in Mexico, and his career as an art
professor and writer in New York. This film is an unscripted interview
between Sheva Zucker and Fain, enhanced by Fain's artwork, photo stills and
music.
