Miryem-Khaye Seigel is a Yiddish singer, songwriter, and recording
artist who ?exemplifies the attempt to bring a centuries-old language
and culture into the contemporary world.? (New York Times). A fluent
Yiddish speaker and scholar, Miryem-Khaye has performed throughout the
United States and internationally with many luminaries of the Yiddish
and Klezmer world, including frequent appearances with Hankus Netsky?s
Hebrew National Salvage. Miryem-Khaye is the recipient of a Folks Arts
Apprenticeship from the New York State Council of the Arts. Her solo
album is Toyznt tamen = A thousand flavors.

Pianist/Arranger/Conductor/SingerSongwriter, Tracy Stark is a 10-Time
MAC Award winner (Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs), in the
categories of Music Director, Piano Bar Entertainer, and Song of the
Year.  She is also a Bistro Award winner for Musical Direction, and
has won Cabaret Hotline?s Songwriter of the Year Award.   Tracy has
worked with Sarah Dash (Labelle), Randy Jones (Village People), Lesley
Gore, Phoebe Snow, Karen Black, Barb Jungr, Brenda Braxton, Eric
Millegan (Bones), Tonya Pinkins, Nathan Lee Graham, and hundreds of
other rock, jazz, and broadway vocalists.   She stays busy creating

Hy Wolfe has been singing Yiddish songs since he was 5 years old, and
his work includes acting and singing performances that have been
featured in publications such as the New York Times, The Post and the
Daily News.

As President of the Hebrew Actor?s Foundation, the oldest acting union
in America, Hy works tirelessly to pursue the dream of a "kleyn-kunst"
(small art) Yiddish Theatre and museum located in the storied Hebrew
Actors Union Building in NYC. This theater and museum will highlight
the immigrant experience of Yiddish speakers who first came to America
and the lives they lived. It will also highlight the role Yiddish
theater had in the foundation and growth of Hollywood and Yiddish
Theater?s influence on 20th century theater and music.

Hy will sing a collection of unique songs, like ?I?m a Litvak and
She?s a Galitz,? and a repertoire of vintage, rarely-performed Yiddish
songs that deserve a chance to shine once again. Hy translates
everything into English, so, you will follow every moment of the
performance. The 60 minutes flies by and you are transported through
time and space, experiencing an authentic Yiddish performance that
pays tribute to our musical heritage. Hy will once again be
accompanied at the piano by Steve Sterner.

Intensive Weekend for Advanced-Intermediate  and Advanced Students: Yiddish

into English by the Yiddish novelist, Chava Rosenfarb. The book is called,
Confessions of a Yiddish Writer and Other Essays, and it is published by
McGill-Qeens University Press. The book consists of 13 essays, divided into
three sections: personal memoir, literary criticism, and two travelogues,
one of which is a lengthy reminiscence of Rosenfarb?s first visit to
Australia and her encounter with the Jewish community there. I am the
editor of this volume as well as one of the translators. The official

Subject: Latutshener, oftsiares

Dear Mendele,

I am looking for the English meanings for two words found in a Yiddish
story written by a 19th-century Polish writer. The two words are
latutshener and oftsiares.

It's been suggested by the Russian groups that Latutshener is a variant of
the Ukrainian town of Letychiv (Polish "Latyczow"), which I think is a
pretty good guess.
Oftsiares would be healers or miracle workers of some kind that a woman
would go to when she was unable to conceive, as with the character in the
story.

Here they are in the sentence, plus a rough translation:

     ? ???? ????? ????? ???? ?????? ???? ??? ??????, ????? ??! ?? ??????
?????? ?????? ?? ? ?? ????? ??? ????? ?????? ????????! ??? ???????????,

        ?What do the holy rabbis say, poor thing? ?God will help,? say
they! She wears neck amulets ? she should already have a pearl necklace for
the money spent!

The Latutshener rabbi had, poor thing, wept with her!  May I see gold as I
have seen with my own eyes, how a tear dropped from his holy eyes to his
holy cheek.

     ???! ?? ??? ??? ????????! ???? ?? ???? ????, ???????, ???????????,
??????? ...

     ???? ??? ?? ????!

        No! She must save herself! Once again to the Hasidic rabbis,
healers, [leeches? herbalist?], gypsies ...

        She would do it all!
