Administrative Fellowship Program
Office of the Assistant to the President
Holyoke Center, Room 935

Cambridge, MA 02138

Harvard upholds a commitment to affirmative action and equal opportunity.

*_PROGRAM OVERVIEW_*
Harvard University's Administrative Fellowship Program seeks to attract
candidates, especially those from underrepresented ethnic minority
groups and those committed to addressing the underrepresentation of
ethnic minorities in university administration, to administrative
careers in higher education. To this end, the Administrative Fellowship
Program offers a twelve-month management experience complemented by a
professional development program.

The Program provides participants with opportunities to broaden their
experience through working in an academic environment as a mid-level
administrator. The Program seeks to enrich and diversify the Harvard
community by bringing talented professionals to Cambridge.

The Program is in its seventeenth year of operation and will draw
Fellows from business, government, education, and the professions. Each
participant will receive a salary from Harvard University. All costs for
the required educational seminar will be covered by Harvard University.
Participants must secure and cover the cost of their housing.

The 2006-2007 Program will begin in September. The Fellows will be
placed in various schools and departments throughout the University.
Reflecting the academic and administrative diversity of the Harvard
community, assignments for each Fellow will differ. However, individual
fellowship needs will be shaped by considering both the school's or
department's needs and the participant's career experience. Fellows are
strongly urged to obtain leaves of absence from their current jobs.
While the University will make every effort to place successful
participants, there is no guarantee of permanent Harvard employment upon
completion of the Program.

Fellows will participate in a seminar series in addition to a full-time
work assignment. Seminars, lectures, and case studies have been designed
to enhance management and administrative skills and to assist in
self-assessment and development. The overall goal of the education
program is to encourage Fellows to assess their own career development
and to generate strategies for advancement.

*_OAP MISSION STATEMENT_*
The Office of the Assistant to the President, established in July 1971,
is committed to ensuring that Harvard University selects faculty and
staff without discriminating against individuals on the basis of race,
color, sex, sexual orientation, religion, creed, national origin, age,
veteran status, or disability unrelated to job requirements. The Office
provides counsel to individuals who belong to the university community
on these and other related matters.

In addition, the Office serves as the University's liaison with the
federal government in matters related to contract compliance concerning
equal employment opportunity. The Office of the Assistant to the
President coordinates the University's affirmative action program,
oversees its implementation and disseminates University policies
concerning affirmative action and equal employment opportunity (AA/EEO).
The Office deals with quality of life issues for women, people of color
and students and employees with alternate lifestyles. The Office also
provides a mentoring service as well as conducts exit interviews with
members of minority groups as appropriate.

Indigenous Politics/*

The Political Science Department at the University of Hawaii at Manoa
(UHM) has been invited by the editors of Alternatives: Global, Local,
Political, a cutting-edge international politics journal, to edit
three special issues (2006, 2007, 2008). All three issues will focus on
the overarching theme of indigenous politics. Our intention is to use
these three issues to explore how indigenous politics can broaden the
parameters of political practice and identity under increasingly global
conditions.

We are interested in theoretical and empirical (qualitative or
quantitative) research that deals with the concept of “indigenous”
innovatively. Manuscripts should be approximately 8,000 9,000 words
in length, double spaced, and follow the Chicago Manual of Style with
notes placed at the end of the text. All manuscripts will be selected
for publication based on peer-review prior to acceptance. Using the
basic question “What is indigenous politics?” the three issues will
theoretically and empirically explore the political economy of
development, governance (law/policy), and migration/citizenship/cyberspace.

white population in the United States, knowledge is limited regarding
contributors to these disparities and, more importantly, public health
interventions that can eliminate them. Investigators who have conducted
research on these topics are invited to submit manuscripts for

journal, titled “Research for MCH Practice in American Indian and

Today, one in every four Americans belongs to a racial or ethnic
minority group. Yet despite tremendous advances in health science in
recent decades, minorities still fall victim to heart disease, cancer,
diabetes and HIV/AIDS in numbers far greater than whites. Clearly, it's
going to take more than medicine alone to change this fact. It will take
health services researchers whose minority perspective can bring a
broader understanding to the political, social, economic and
environmental realities of the disparity of health care between
minorities and whites.

To prepare top candidates to pursue research in health services, the
Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics (LDI) and the Health Care
Systems Department of the Wharton School (HCSD), University of
Pennsylvania are seeking applicants for our summer research program for
underrepresented minority undergraduate students. The Summer
Undergraduate Minority Research (SUMR) program, in its seventh year,
provides rising sophomores, juniors and seniors with an opportunity to
receive a generous monthly stipend to conduct health services research
on a topic of their choice, under the guidance of Penn faculty. In
addition to conducting research, SUMR Scholars will participate in an
orientation program, attend weekly seminars, attend a national
conference, and network with health services researchers. The program
runs from June through August.
