Qualifications include familiarity with Native American languages and cultures,
a broad understanding of tribal education, experience in administration and
grant writing, and demonstrated ability to work with and understand Native
American studies.
Responsiblities include administering and leading development of established
Native American minor programs; teaching courses in the minor; developing
curriculum; assisting NMU and area faculty with inclusion of Native American
content in their courses; working with local Native American organizations;
maintaining and developing relationships with regional tribal governments,
citizens, organizations, and schools.
The Center was established in 1990 to administer the Native American Studies
curriculum and serve the University and community as an educational and
cultural liaison. Centrally located among five federally recognized tribes in
the scenic Upper Peninsula of Michigan, NMU has an approximate enrollment of
9,500 with over 200 Native students. The University is located in Marquette,
MIchigan, on the southern shore of Lake Superior in an area known for extensive
outdoor activities, a regional medical center, and local cultural activities.
