_BROAD SCOPE OF POSITION_

The NAGPRA Liaison is a full time position that will assist the Colorado 
Historical Society to comply with the Native American Graves Protection 
and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).  The NAGPRA Liaison will coordinate 
tribal consultations, provide information to tribes about Colorado 
Historical Society (CHS) collections, work with the Colorado Commission 
of Indian Affairs (CCIA) on NAGPRA partnership efforts, and coordinate 
efforts of the CHS NAGPRA team.  This position is a non-classified, full 
time position exempt from overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act, 
reporting to the Curator of Material Culture, and serves at the pleasure 
of the Board of Directors.  This position has been exempted from the 
state personnel system.

_DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES_

   1. Working with the CCIA Executive Secretary and CHS staff, complete
      the terms of the FY 2005 National Park Service (NPS) NAGPRA grant.
   2. Manage the NPS NAGPRA grant budget. 
   3. Coordinate implementation of the CHS/CCIA "Process for
      Consultation, Transfer, and Reburial of Culturally Unidentifiable
      Native American Human Remains and Associated Funerary Objects
      Originating form Inadvertent Discoveries on Colorado State and
      Private Lands". 
   4. Working with Material Culture staff, respond to requests for
      information by Native American Tribes about CHS collections.
   5. Lead efforts to process repatriation claims under NAGPRA.
   6. Research CHS collections as necessary under NAGPRA.
   7. Coordinate tribal consultations, coordinate publication of Federal
      Register Notices, and assist the State Archaeologist on transfers
      of human remains and funerary objects.
   8. Oversee care of the human remains and associated funerary objects
      in CHS collections.
   9. Chair the CHS NAGPRA Team.

 

_QUALIFICATIONS:_

Requirements: The position requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in 
anthropology, history or museum studies from an accredited college or 
university.  In addition, experience in NAGPRA implementation, knowledge 
of western American Indian history, cross-cultural sensitivity, 
knowledge of Native American cultures, and a thorough understanding of 
museum ethics and best practices are required.  This position requires 
the ability to travel independently throughout the state, including 
overnight stays.  A valid Colorado driver's license must be obtained 
within three months of accepting this appointment and must be maintained 
as a condition of employment. 

 

Preferred qualifications include a master's degree in anthropology, 
history or museum studies from an accredited college or university and 
experience implementing NAGPRA for tribes, museums or agencies.  Other 
desirable abilities include excellent written and interpersonal 
communication skills, ability to speak before large groups, good 
organizational skills, budget management experience, computer 
competence, proficiency with ARGUS (or similar museum cataloging 
software), ability to successfully plan large meetings, and professional 
objectivity.   Experience working with museum collections, including 
osteological human remains, is desirable.

 

*Special Necessary Requirements:*

Must be able to climb ladders, and lift 40 pounds.  A condition of 
employment is the successful completion of a background check.
