*Director, Office for First Nations*

   *Simon* Fraser University

   *Burnaby*, BC

Simon Fraser University has retained Ray & Berndtson/Tanton Mitchell to
assist in identifying qualified candidates for their Director, Office
for First Nations. We are writing to you in the hope that you may be
able to help us identify potential candidates for this exciting role.

Simon Fraser University's Senate and Board of Governors recently
approved a First Nations University Wide Strategic Plan that seeks to
transform the approach to academic programming, community engagement,
student support and research for First Nations.

Achieving this vision will be the role of the new Director, Office for
First Nations, which will serve to coordinate First Nations activities
across the University - drawing together researchers, educators,
students, elders, First Nations communities and non-Aboriginal members
of the University. The new Director will provide leadership,
coordination and direction to the evolving Office for First Nations.

With three distinctive campuses on Burnaby Mountain, at Harbour Centre
in downtown Vancouver, and in an award-winning new tower in Surrey, the
University enrolls some 5,000 graduate students and 25,000
undergraduates. Simon Fraser University is widely regarded as one of
Canada's best and most innovative, publicly-funded universities,
committed to excellence in teaching and research. There is, however, a
recognized opportunity to improve participation rates and the quality of
educational experience and the environment for Aboriginal students and
faculty at Simon Fraser University. The new Director will play a leading
role in forging relationships with the academic departments as well as
helping to build support systems that will encourage scholarship and a
rich cultural life for students and faculty.

This is a tremendously exciting opportunity for an energetic,
collaborative and culturally sensitive academic leader with a deep
interest in the issues of indigenous peoples and with a cultural
affinity with BC's First Nations communities. This new Director will
help SFU contribute more substantially to the development of First
Nations individuals and communities so that they can participate more
fully on an equal footing with other Canadians.

The successful candidate for this position will be a well established
university teacher and researcher who holds a PhD or equivalent degree.
An administrative background, experience in working with government and
other funding organizations, and strong connections to Aboriginal
organizations, locally, provincially, nationally and internationally,
are all characteristics that will ensure the success of the new Director.

My colleagues Ken Werker, Stephanie Falls or I would be delighted to
hear from you regarding potential candidates for this exciting position.
