Indigenous Peoples Weekend
Songs in Stone: An Arctic Journey Home
Friday, October 10 at 5:30 pm; reception to follow
In 1998, Canadian filmmaker John Houston (Yale '75) directed and co-wrote his first film - Songs in Stone: An Arctic Journey Home. This award-winning one-hour documentary, shot mainly on Baffin Island in the wilds of the Canadian Arctic, pays tribute to the sculptors and printmakers of Cape Dorset, and to John's parents, the late James and Alma Houston, whose historic collaboration launched Inuit art onto the world stage. Our screening will be followed by a Q&A session with Mr. Houston and a reception in his honor. Free Admission

Inuit Film Day
Saturday, October 11 from 1:00 to 6:00 pm
At the Whitney Humanities Center, 53 Wall Street, New Haven
Two captivating films - Nanook of the North (1922) and Atanarjuat (The Fast Runner) (2001) - comprise this Inuit film mini-festival. Join us for commentary and discussion at the Whitney Humanities Center. Refreshment at intermission Free Admission

A Celebration of Native American Cultures
Monday, October 13 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm
At the Yale Peabody Museum we celebrate Columbus Day with a closer look at the lifestyles and traditions of native peoples. Join us for crafts, games, storytelling and a midday performance as we focus this year on Native American cultures, with specific concentration on the Inuit peoples from northern North America.  Museum Members: Free Admission   Non Members: Museum Admission
