Assistant Professor - Fall 2010
Departments of Anthropology and Radio, Television and Film
UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS, Denton, TX.
The Department of Anthropology and the Department of Radio, Television
and Film at the University of North Texas invite applications for a
jointly appointed, tenure track, interdisciplinary position to begin
fall 2010. Responsibilities include maintaining a consistent record of
peer reviewed scholarly/ creative work, teaching undergraduate and
graduate courses, mentoring students, and service in the participating
departments, colleges, university, and professions. The candidate will
be expected to attract and mentor indigenous students. Workload will be
equitably divided between Anthropology and Radio, Television and Film.
UNT is developing nationally recognized interdisciplinary research
programs that actively pursue extramural funding.
Required qualifications: MFA, PhD or other terminal degree in Media,
Anthropology, Visual Ethnography, or a related discipline; demonstrable
interest and scholarly research on issues at the intersection of media
studies and the Indigenous cultures of North or South America. The
candidate must have experience working with Native groups or
communities.
Preferred qualifications: competence to teach in both departments, as
demonstrated by educational background, courses taught, or
interdisciplinary publication record. Preference will also be given to
those whose methods and/or professional record indicates research on the
ideology of decolonization; experience incorporating recruitment
strategies or previous experience in successful recruiting or mentoring
indigenous students. Desired areas of research include: the production,
usage, and analysis of media texts by, for, or about American Indian or
indigenous American people and sovereignty, human rights, environmental
issues, critical race theory, pedagogy, policy, or traditional
knowledge.
This is an interdisciplinary position involving two departments (Radio,
Television and Film and Anthropology) and two colleges (Arts and
Sciences and Public Affairs and Community Service). The Department of
Radio, Television and Film offers BA, MA/MS, and MFA degrees and
operates extensive audio, video, and film production laboratories as
well as KNTU, a 100,000 watt student-staffed radio station and North
Texas Television (NTTV), a cable outlet. The Center for Spanish
Language Media is also housed within the RTVF Department. The
Department of Anthropology is one of the nation's leading departments of
applied anthropology, with foci in business, medical, educational,
ecological/ environmental anthropology, and migration and border
studies. It encourages service-based learning. The department offers
both MA/ MS degrees in anthropology, including both a distance-learning
as well as in-residence degree.
UNT is located in the Dallas-Ft Worth Metroplex, a community of some
seven million residents and the nation's fifth largest media market.
The university has more than 36,000 students. UNT is an emerging
research university with 50 PhD and 111 Masters Degree programs, and was
ranked in the top 10 "Up and Coming" public national universities by US
News and World Report in 2009.
