*About This Year’s Theme*/*: */
*Adapt-ability - *The global challenges of the 21st century require more
than lip-service, academic discourse, corporate responsibility
statements, or political pontification – they demand informed action –
and they will benefit from Native innovation.
As far as the future health of our Mother Earth is concerned, humanity
stands at a precipice. If, as many believe, climate change, water
rights, food security, resource management, geological resourcing
impacts, and other environmental issues have escalated beyond the point
of return, it may be too late to discuss stoppage or even avoidance. We
are at a moment where the call is for adaptive solutions.
Further, for many of us land-based people, particularly but not limited
to those in the polar/northern regions, these global issues take on an
acutely local significance, and even touch upon sovereignty issues for
American Indians and Alaska Natives.
We Native people have adapted to change before. We are adapt-able.
Certainly, traditional knowledge holds some keys to possible solutions
to our global environmental threats. As Native people, AISES invites you
to embark on a vital shared discourse around these crucial topics.
* What is the role that our rich Native traditions and strong STEM
talent can and must play in addressing “adapt-ability” issues?
* Where do we need to exert our innovation, influence, and industry?
* How can we leverage our formidable brain-trust – students,
professionals, and educators – to gain a place at the table and help
mitigate these 21st century global imperatives?
* What convergence of politics and place can we, as Native people,
help engender?
* What is the message and inspiration we can pass along to the next
generation, who will be both living with the ramifications of
today’s decisions and formulating tomorrow’s answers?
These matters are much more than eye-popping headlines or catchy
talking-points. Indeed, in addressing them from our Native perspective,
we are given a chance to honor the sacrifices and valor of our ancestors
– and sustain our pledge to the seventh generation to come.
You are invited to join us in an exploration of these essential topics,
from the uniquely significant view of the Native community and the STEM
community alike.
