              <div>As the Chairperson of the Native American Indian
                Education Association of New York (NAIEA/NY) and former
                chair of the National Advisory Council on Indian
                Education (NACIE) and a Native woman passionately
                concerned over the education of our tribal youth, it has
                taken me nearly 10 years to convince the Office of
                Indian Education at the U.S. Department of Education to
                agree to host one of their tribal listening/learning or
                "consultation" sessions in the northeast, particularly
                in New York State.  In working with the new OIE
                Director, Joyce Silverthorne, OIE has agreed to come to
                New York State on Friday, July 20, 2012, at The Sage
                Colleges in Troy, New York.</div>
              <div> </div>
              <div>While the OIE contractor has described this session
                in their flyer (see attached) with the use of the word
                "urban," it was done so only because the session is not
                being conducted on a tribal territory/reservation, but
                in an urban setting.  (And yes, believe-it-or-not, Troy
                is considered urban.) My hope is that this email
                clarifies any confusion regarding the federal wording.</div>

              <div><strong>I write to you today to express the critical
                  importance of at least one representative attending
                  from each of your tribal organizations, colleges that
                  host Native students, and not-for-profit agencies that
                  support Native youth.  I</strong> do not believe that
                OIE has sponsored a northeastern session for at least 10
                years, and I hope that you agree with me that it is
                important for them to hear the voices of those of us who
                live in the northeastern part of the United States
                and/or work in programs east of the Mississippi.</div>

              <div>Please consider attending and/or making arrangements
                for P-20 Indian education staff, parents, teachers and
                faculty, community representatives, and/or
                administrators to attend.  I also urge you to reach out
                to your respective local tribal leaders, share the
                attached registration information with them, and invite
                them to attend with you.  The OIE director and other
                staff members will be available to listen to your
                comments and learn from your input.</div>
