<div>
<div>Good Afternoon,</div>
<div> </div>
<div>I hope this email finds you well.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>As the Chairperson of the Native American Indian
Education Association of New York (NAIEA/NY) and former
chair of the National Advisory Council on Indian
Education (NACIE) and a Native woman passionately
concerned over the education of our tribal youth, it has
taken me nearly 10 years to convince the Office of
Indian Education at the U.S. Department of Education to
agree to host one of their tribal listening/learning or
"consultation" sessions in the northeast, particularly
in New York State. In working with the new OIE
Director, Joyce Silverthorne, OIE has agreed to come to
New York State on Friday, July 20, 2012, at The Sage
Colleges in Troy, New York.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>While the OIE contractor has described this session
in their flyer (see attached) with the use of the word
"urban," it was done so only because the session is not
being conducted on a tribal territory/reservation, but
in an urban setting. (And yes, believe-it-or-not, Troy
is considered urban.) My hope is that this email
clarifies any confusion regarding the federal wording.</div>
<div> </div>
<div><strong>I write to you today to express the critical
importance of at least one representative attending
from each of your tribal organizations, colleges that
host Native students, and not-for-profit agencies that
support Native youth. I</strong> do not believe that
OIE has sponsored a northeastern session for at least 10
years, and I hope that you agree with me that it is
important for them to hear the voices of those of us who
live in the northeastern part of the United States
and/or work in programs east of the Mississippi.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Please consider attending and/or making arrangements
for P-20 Indian education staff, parents, teachers and
faculty, community representatives, and/or
administrators to attend. I also urge you to reach out
to your respective local tribal leaders, share the
attached registration information with them, and invite
them to attend with you. The OIE director and other
staff members will be available to listen to your
comments and learn from your input.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>As always, please email me if you have any questions
or need additional information. Please also access the
registration link provided in the attached document
(attached in both PDF and Word, for your convenience).
Also feel free to share this information with others as
you deem necessary. This session is an open meeting.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Many thanks for your consideration, as always,</div>
