The University of California Museum of Paleontology (UCMP) anticipates
hiring a Museum Scientist (MS or PhD), full time for 12 months, to
supervise an exciting NSF-funded Museum project to incorporate the former
USGS Menlo Park collections of Alaskan, Arctic and West Coast invertebrates
(predominantly mollusks) into the UCMP collections. The position is
primarily collection management work, but will provide some time for
research. One of the incidental objectives of the project is to identify
special research materials. The former USGS collections are a veritable
gold mine, providing unique opportunities to the personnel hired for the

Museum of Paleontology 
$30,200 - 45,400 
Job # 04-301-30/SL 
Closing date: May 7, 1999 

Job Duties: Curate the Menlo Park fossil collection and assist with
integration of this collection with the UCMP invertebrate collections.
Train and oversee student employees. Study the collections for material of
particular research value and report findings.  Research essential data
missing from locality catalogs. Review, verify, and analyze data entered
into computer databases. Perform library searches and examine maps and
other reference materials as needed. Required qualifications: Higher
education in geology, paleontology, or related disciplines, or equivalent
work experience. Knowledge and experience in biostratigraphy, paleontology,
and geology. Accurate record keeping skills. Ability to compile and
organize data in written and oral formats and effectively communicate
information to others. Computer experience, especially with relational
databases. Ability to manage/coordinate projects. Preferred qualifications:
Knowledge and experience in Mesozoic and Cenozoic biostratigraphy of the
Western U.S. Experience in paleontological curation. Experience overseeing
graduate/undergraduate student workers. Experience with Paradox and dBASE
IV, including modifying tables and interfaces and generating reports.
Knowledge of the major Mesozoic and Cenozoic molluscan taxa of the Western
U.S.
