Ichthyology Collection Manager Retiring
It is with great regret that we announce that Bill Saul has chosen to
retire. Bill has served as the collection manager of the Ichthyology
Department at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia (ANSP) for 27
years (1972-1999). During his ANS career, he modernized, organized and
computerized the ichthyological collections at Philadelphia. Bill has also
participated in numerous Academy expeditions to South America and helped
build our extensive collection of Neotropical fishes. Most importantly,
Bill has provided years of dedicated service to the ichthyological
community. His love of fishes, his enthusiasm, and his incredible knowledge
will be sorely missed. No matter the inducement offered, we were unable to
dissuade him from his plan to retire to a new home (on a lake, of course!)
in Tennessee after 20 September 1999. The Academy's revitalized commitment
to its collections has led to the recent hiring of Dr. John Lundberg as a
new Curator in the Ichthyology Department. Likewise, concern for the
maintenance of uninterrupted collections care and service to the scientific
community is the impetus for the recruiting advertisement for Bill's
successor that follows this announcement.
