     TECHNICIAN (ENTOMOLOGY)
     
     RESPONSIBILITIES:
     
     
     COLLECTIONS  MANAGEMENT
     
     Manages study loans of the research collections between ROM and other 
     academic agencies.  This involves setting up and recording 
     transactions, ensuring appropriate and safe delivery of material, 
     ensuring returned material is quarantined and treated against 
     potential pest infestations, and prepared for incorporation into the 
     collections.
     
     Participates in the curation and maintenance of the collections, 
     incorporating new specimens as appropriate into the collection. 
     
     Participates in adding new material to the library and maintenance of 
     the library and reprint collections.
     
     Performs identifications of arthropods found in galleries and 
     collection storage facilities and subsequent consultations with museum 
     staff.
     
     Trains and supervises casual staff and volunteers working in the 
     collection and/or live room. 
     
     Other related duties as required.
     
     
     DATABASE MANAGEMENT GROUP
     
     Catalogues entomology specimens, compiles data from multiple sources, 
     enters specimen-related data, ensures data entered into the database 
     is accurate, and creates collection records and labels as required. 
     
     Participates in the development of entomology databases.
     
     
     FIELDWORK
     
     Participates in curatorially directed, interdisciplinary fieldwork and 
     research and performs other related duties as required.
     
     
     PUBLIC PROGRAMMES
     
     Oversees the live room where cultures of exotic insects and arthropods 
     are maintained under controlled environmental conditions for use in 
     the gallery, for research, for Education and Programmes Departments 
     and other public interactive events such as temporary exhibits and 
     March Break, coordinating appropriate actions where necessary and/or 
     for upgrading where deemed.  
     
     Troubleshoots insect and spider related inquiries.  This usually 
     requires identifying submitted specimens, often to species level, 
     literature researching and consulting. 
     
     
     QUALIFICATIONS:    
     
     Bachelor of Science with specialization in entomology plus four (4) 
     years closely related experience, or acceptable equivalent. 
     
     Experience and proficiency in insect identification especially of 
     domiciliary arthropods.  
     
     Sound knowledge of techniques for insect culture.
     
     Microcomputer experience including use of databases, spreadsheets and 
     word processing.
     
     Demonstrated communication skills.  Tact, judgement, objectivity and 
     confidentiality are required.
     
     Supervisory and organizational skills, resourcefulness, initiative, 
     and ability to work independently.
     
     Driver's license required.
     
     
     
     STARTING DATE:   As soon as possible 
     
     SALARY RANGE:    $35,016 - $40,018 (Cdn)
