A check of the note I hastily wrote when I got the virus warning
shows that the subject title of the e-mail also included NHCOLL-L:523.
After I sent the warning to the group, I checked e-mail and found that
Norton only deleted the attachment, the email message was still there. Many
email programs produce strange attachments that are sent along with them
and in my Eudora program end up in the attach folder without the email
message ever having any info about an attachment. Below is the message a
fellow staff member sent me about the virus worm and how it is spread.

Gary, here is info on WScript.kak Worm from SYMANTEC:
VBS.KakWorm spreads using Microsoft Outlook Express. It attaches itself to all
outgoing messages via the Signature feature of Outlook Express and Internet
Explorer newsgroup reader.
The worm utilizes a known Microsoft Outlook Express security hole so that a
viral
file is created on the system without having to run any attachment. Simply
reading
the received email message will cause the virus to be placed on the system.
Microsoft has patched this security hole. The patch is available from
Microsoft's
website. If you have a patched version of Outlook Express, this worm will
not work
automatically.
